Software
Everybody knows that the mantra in real estate is location, location, location. Well in the genealogy world that mantra is document your sources, document your sources, document your sources!
Back in the day when there were no computers, internet, or email, people had to write everything down on a legal pad or type it up on an old manual typewriter (or if they were lucky, on an IBM selectric), place it all into a manilla folder, then come up with some sort of filing system to keep it organized. Today however the majority of people have at least one computer if not more and with all of the available genealogy software programs available you can now keep all those dates, places, family lore, and pictures all in one location.
There are a number of software programs out there and trying to decide which one you should use can be daunting. Most if not all offer trials or free copies of the basic version with the option to purchase an advanced or deluxe version.
The listed programs are broken down into two categories, genealogy programs and add-on's, which are used in conjunction with the genealogy program its self.
Everything is listed alphabetically so as not to imply one program as being better than another. You can always google 'genealogy software programs' and get a software review to help decide which program to use.
This is by no means a thorough list and if you have found a program that is particularly useful let us know so that we can expand this listing.
